 How to

 Adopt

Our Goldens

This is a partial list of the dogs we have available for adoption.  There is no guarantee how long each dog will remain available, but the list is typical of the dogs we normally have available for adoption.

RATHER THAN WAITING UNTIL YOU SEE A GOLDEN POSTED THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU COMPLETE THE ADOPTION APPLICATION as soon as possible. THE APPROVAL PROCESS COULD TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS.  By the time your application process is completed, many of the Goldens you see on this web site will have been adopted.

We have dogs coming into SEVA GRREAT and being adopted out every week.  So, it is impossible to keep this list completely accurate.  Golden Days Open House is held each month.  Although no dogs are actually adopted out at these public events, it is an excellent way to see the dogs and talk to the foster family about each dog.  We cannot guarantee which dogs will be at the Golden Days Open House.

If you are interested in any of the dogs on this listing, please select the option "How to Adopt" on the left hand side of this page.

In order to adopt one of our Goldens, you must live in our service area, which is limited to Southeastern Virginia.  If you live elsewhere, we recommend you check the nationwide list of Golden Retriever Rescues, which is maintained on the Golden Retriever Club of America-National Rescue Society and Golden Retrievers in Cyberspace websites.

FENCED IN YARD - All dogs need a fenced in yard.  Active dogs need an area large enough to really run and stretch their legs.

SENIOR PROGRAM - Available for dogs 9 years and older.  This program allows dogs to be adopted with a reduced adoption fee.

BAILEY 9-year-old spayed female

Bailey is a beautiful, sweet, and calm girl.  Bailey is looking for a home that will give her lots of TLC. She loves to be petted more than anything. She also loves walks, going to the dog park, and playing ball. She is very polite and doesn't get on furniture or beg for scraps. She gets along great with kids, other dogs and came from a house with cats. She appears healthy overall but needs to gain about 10 lbs.  She also may have a little bit of arthritis in her left leg but it doesn't slow her down.

BRADLEY 1.5-year-old neutered male
Bradley came to SEVA GRREAT because his owners lived in an apartment where pets were not allowed.  His curly tail and unique two-toned tongue give him a bit of a designer look, but he is still has a heart of gold.  He is a very smart dog and has quickly learned what is expected of him.  He can be trusted with the run of the house when his family is gone and is fully housebroken.  He is not destructive in any way and does not counter surf. He is a fairly small dog, weighing only about 65 pounds and compared to other Goldens, sheds very little.  He is a very loving boy and follows his foster mom around the house.  He is not a high energy dog, but loves to play fetch with a tennis ball and to go for daily walks.  He also has the unique talent of being able to chase his tail while running up the stairs.  He walks quietly on the leash using a "gentle leader", but is always ready to chase the neighborhood squirrels and rabbits when he goes out for a walk.  He will stand by the back door when he needs to go out and will sit patiently on the deck when he is ready to come back in.  If some one comes to the front door, he will bark, but is otherwise very quiet.  He firmly believes that anyone who comes into the house is there to play fetch with him and will invite them to open the back door so he can get his tennis ball.  He understands "sit", "down", "come", "out", "wait", and "no".  He rides so quietly in the car that you might forget that he is there. He thinks the cats in his foster home are his "fun buddies" and will chase them if they run, but will immediately back off if they stand their ground.  Although Bradley enjoys socializing with the backyard neighbor's dogs at his foster home, he has been known to be picky about his dog friends and for this reason we think the ideal home for Bradley would be one that does not have other dogs.

BUDDY   12-year old neutered male

Here is BUDDY!  He is a very quiet senior dog, he can get up and down our stairs with no problems.   He loves to play with a tennis ball.  He is a very fast learner and got the hang of the doggy door in the first week he was with his foster home.   Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?!  Buddy is very loving and enjoys laying on a comfy dog bed.  He wants to be by your side and will follow you around the house.  He's on his way losing weight.  Goes on long walks, slowly, but loves those walks. Great with other dogs, and even lets his little foster sibling poodles chew on his ear and jump on him!   Consider adding this wonderful senior golden to your life!

BUDDY (#2) 8-year-old neutered male
Buddy is an eight year old neutered male who loves balls and toys. He gets along well with other dogs and cats. We would guess he is fine with children although he is a
klutz and might knock over a small child. The only command he reliably knows is "sit" but he seems smart enough to learn other commands quickly. He likes to walk on lease and swim. He is housebroken and loves to be near people. We have not had to use a crate and he has had the run of the house. His only fault is that he likes to take all his toys out of the box and spread them around the house. Currently Buddy weighs 99 pounds but should probably be at 90. He is a big sweet boy!

DODGER 8-year old neutered male

Dodger has a very thick, soft fur coat with a rich golden color.  He is very cuddly and nice to hug!  And look at those eyes!  He is alert and spunky for an 8-year old guy!  He loves to play this with his foster family, including young children, and their two dogs.  Dodger requires a fenced yard (no electric fences please) if you are interested in adopting him.  His age only shows in a slightly slower run and a slowness on stairs.  Because of this, Dodger would love a ranch/one-level home or a setting where the main living area is on the first floor.  Dodger enjoys walks and car rides.  He is good with sit, down, and waiting in a down position until okay to get his food.  He is fully housebroken and can be left up to 9 hours inside without accidents.

EMMA 10-12-year old spayed female

Emma is our miracle senior (10-12+years), who is looking for someone who desires a low energy, low maintenance sweetie.  When we first got her she was being medicated for seizures and on several meds for various old age maladies.  However, in the last 2 months Emma has improved dramatically!  After weaning her off most of her meds she has gained a new lust for life. She was actually seen chasing her tail one day!  Emma is housebroken as long as she goes out immediately after eating. She will let you know when she wants to come in. She does well in the house all day but would love someone to follow around.  Since gaining some energy back Emma has discovered the joy of getting in the trash.  We are working on it but are usually laughing too hard as she will knock over the trash can , get her head in, and then fall asleep.  A bit of Velcro on the lid has been helping that.  Emma is a bit slow to get up and sometimes will get stuck on a slick floor and require help. If she gets stuck she will let you know.  She has the sweetest eyes and can melt you with them.  Sometimes, she looks at you like she doesn't believe she deserves love and attention, but she most assuredly does, and gets a lot of it from her foster kids and family.  She gets along well with other dogs, kids, guinea pigs and cats don't bother her either.   This is a kind, gentle old girl who will add such joy to your life if given the chance.

FRED 2-3-year-old neutered male

Meet Fred - AKA, Fred the Head.  Weighing in at 65 lbs, Fred still needs to gain some lbs to reach a healthy weight. Given his healthy appetite at meal time, this will not be a problem.  Fred loves to chew with his mouth open, resulting in an eating style that is truly unique leading to laughter from anyone near.  Rescued by a local firefighter, this handsome golden was brought to SEVA GRREAT through another rescue.  He has had hip surgery, from which he is still recovering. Fred still has some difficulty with stairs, so he will need a home that is either a one-story or one with carpeted, low and easy steps.  He has been crate-trained as needed for his recovery and still loves to take naps in his open-doored crate.  Fred has probably never really used his back leg. To help him fully recover, Fred is looking for an owner that has the patience and time to help him gain full strength in his hip.  His new owners will need to be diligent in working with him by encouraging long, gentle walks on a short lead, possibly including professional physical therapy care.  His foster family has learned that Fred is a strong chewer, so soft toys are no longer left on the floor. Nylabones and Kongs work great! Fred is a wonderful house guest and has excellent manners, never getting on the furniture without an invitation.  He gets along with other cats and dogs, but he will often try to push them out of the way for attention.  Fred is the quintessential golden who is a true velcro dog, as well as a leaner - always wanting to be near his people.  As he is truly dedicated to his owners, he can be somewhat protective outside and inquisitive of other dogs/squirrels/cats/etc.  He will need to go to a home with a physical fence -- no invisible or electric fences, please. Fred is currently being treated for hook/whipworms & an ear infection.

GRACIE  4 month-old spayed female

Gracie is wonderful 4 1/2 month old puppy, full of life and joy.  She is sweet, well mannered, and smart!  She plays with reckless abandon and has won over the hearts of everyone who comes in contact with her.  She loves to play outside and chase lightning bugs.  Sadly, Gracie was abandoned by a breeder.  She had corrective surgery by a vet in Richmond before SEVA GRREAT took her in for an anatomical abnormality which affected the way her kidney passes the urine to her ureters.  It bypassed the holding cell of her bladder and left her with problems controlling urination.  Now, Gracie's foster mom notes that she goes outside and goes "potty" on a regular basis like any good puppy but will dribble when she is taking a break from playing.  She wears a diaper on when she is in the house and when she falls asleep she is so relaxed she urinates in her diaper.  This only affects her urine continence; she is able to hold her bowels.  Our vets have completed some initial diagnostic testing and are recommending a procedure that has a good success rate, but Gracie may need additional procedures at a vet school throughout her lifetime, as often as every year, which cost about $1000 per procedure.  SEVA GRREAT is planning her initial procedure in August 2008 when she is about 6 months old.  In the meantime, Gracie is looking for a family with a special heart and the means to provide for her medical care as she gets older.  If you are interested in adopting her, we will discuss the particulars of her medical situation and needs.

JAKE 1-year-old neutered male

Jake is a very sweet guy who SEVA GRREAT rescued from an animal control facility where he was picked up as a stray.  His hair is growing in nicely after he required shaving from his fur being so matted and dirty at the shelter.  He has done very well in a home environment and is great with his foster family's three kids, ages 6 and under.  He will pick up a stuffed animal or the like once in a while and walk off, but as soon as you get to him he will drop it.  He is housebroken.  He loves to lay in the hall bath downstairs on the hardwood with his head coming out into the hall to feel the cool air from the vent.  He walks well on the leash and loves walks.  He chased his foster family's cat quite a bit to start, but is not as obsessed now.  He is still very interested and will chase her if she comes near.  He is the only dog currently in his foster home, so he has not had much interaction except at the fence with the neighbor's dogs.  He is very afraid of storms and did climb over the fence and came around to the porch at the start of the last storm.  He is going to make a great family pet!
